The money or banking frauds is one of the booming business for criminals in India, as per a Telenor survey India is the most affected country in Asia when it comes to online banking bank frauds. The survey too revealed that 7 out of 10 victims of banking frauds could not recover money and it was lost.
As per statistics 36 percent Indians have been somehow cheated online with 8.19 lakh of rupees Asian average financial loss which is very high. -Telenor survey
The criminals use many methods to trap individuals and perform the crime, the various methods can be. Stealing debit cards or credit cards. Cloning or debit or credit cards. Stealing banking passwords or pins. Hack an account or mobile application. Lottery scamming. Fake bank email or Phishing emails. Personating as buyers on different on platforms like olx. Etc.
There has been lot of literature around the explanation of these scams on internet, there are various behavioral things which we should adopt to be saved and do not get trapped in these scams.
- While transaction use the Virtual keyboard rather than the physical keypad, the former is far more secure than latter.
- Do not install any untrusted unknown app on your computer and Mobile phones.
- For you home PC it is recommended use an antivirus which is paid one, if not paid used at least a free one which provides internet security for free.
- Do not store any banking information on your mobiles if you need then make it encrypted words like if you login is Robert write it as r*****t so that you may only decode it. As many people discard their phones along with this data or the phone gets stolen.
- Don’t take any action or reply on messages or email stating that you have won a lottery prize of a large sum of rupees or dollars, such fraudsters can collect your vital information from you like bank accounts identity cards, account numbers etc. and can commit various crimes like taking loan on your names or getting credit cards etc.

- Disable your card for foreign transaction as in foreign transactions only require card number and CVV and no other authentication this can at least minimize the risk for large transactions done by fraudsters.
- With new WIFI enabled credit cards the fraudsters can make a transaction up to Rupees 2000 from your RFID card by just touching your pockets, so use a wallet with RFID protection, and be alert at crowdy places.
- Be alert and never talk on phone while doing atm transactions, people many times forget their cards in ATM as their attention id diverted due to phone call.
- Do not click on links of emails personating banking email which offers unbelievable benefit and divert you to banks site for login, as these are used in phishing by fraudsters.
- Do not go to ATM in odd hours. Be most alert till one week after pay days as this is the time the fraudsters are most active.
- Be aware to do transaction on OLX and never meet with unknown person for any dealing alone and on quiet place.
- Do not share the OTP coming on your mobile even if the fraudster would call you and say that he or she will deposit money in your account if you share OTP.
