📢 Income Tax Notice for Section 80GGC – What You Should Do

If you’ve received a message from the Income Tax Department about a tax deduction claimed under Section 80GGC, don’t worry! Here’s a simple breakdown of what it means and what you need to do.

🔍 What Does This Mean?
  • Section 80GGC is a tax benefit for people who donate money to political parties or electoral trusts.
  • The tax department is asking you to verify whether you claimed this deduction correctly in your Income Tax Return (ITR) for A.Y. 2022-23.
  • If there is any mistake, they are giving you time until March 31, 2025, to correct it.
✅ Steps to Take
1️⃣ Check Your Tax Return
  • Open your ITR for A.Y. 2022-23 and see if you claimed a deduction under Section 80GGC.
  • Did you actually donate to a political party?
2️⃣ Find Proof
  • If you donated, check if you have a receipt from the political party or electoral trust.
  • Donations must be made through bank transfer, cheque, or online payment (cash donations are NOT allowed).
3️⃣ Cross-Check with Your Tax Records
  • Log in to the Income Tax Portal and check your Annual Information Statement (AIS) or Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS).
  • If your donation is not listed there, that might be why you received this notice.
4️⃣ Decide What to Do
  • If the claim is correct → Keep the proof safe. No action is needed for now, but you might need to show it later.
  • If the claim is incorrect → File a revised ITR before March 31, 2025, to fix the mistake.

  2. Choose the option to file a revised return (under Section 139(5)).
  3. Make the necessary corrections.
  4. Submit and e-verify your return.
⚠️ Why This Matters
  • If you ignore this notice and the claim is incorrect, the tax department may reject the deduction and ask you to pay extra tax.
  • If your claim is correct, you may still need to provide proof later.

📌 Take action before March 31, 2025, to avoid any issues!
